A Canadian artist has canceled his show, "Since 1957," which was due to open on May 2 in New York, over President Trump's annexation threats. "The United States is no longer a country that Canadians can trust, and I feel it would be unpleasant and wrong to mount a show in the U.S. at this time," Toronto-based Alan Belcher wrote on Facebook. Now, @ArtNews is wondering, is a cultural boycott brewing? This follows Canadian author Louise Penny's cancelation of the U.S. leg of her book tour.

When the United States went to war with Iraq, people from across the world fought with them — including Ukraine, which didn’t ask for money or minerals in return. @timkmak and Myroslava Tanska-Vikulova write for Counteroffensive about the “trend of the Trump administration taking decades-long partnerships as mere leverage for transactions.”

Last week, Aix Marseille University in France offered funding to American scientists who feel like their work is being censored. It’s already seeing great interest from researchers at NASA, Yale and Stanford, and the program may extend through more universities across Europe. “We are witnessing a new brain drain,” Éric Berton, Aix Marseille University’s president, said in a press release. Here’s more from @emanuelmaiberg for @404mediaco

Why do the U.S. media and political classes continue to dismiss Trump's statements about taking over Canada as a distraction from the "real issues," rather than a genuine threat, and a scandal? wonders Asawin Suebsaeng for @RollingStone. Here's his story about the erosion of decency in the United States, some of the evidence that Trump's threats are serious, and how the damage has already been done. "It is, or at least it should be, a damp stain on our national conscience, and your average outraged Canadian is responding rationally," Suebsaeng writes.

Don't say gay in Trump's America — even if you're just referring to the name of a plane. @AssociatedPress reports on how the Defense Department is purging diversity, equity and inclusion content from its website. So far, 26,000 images have been marked for deletion including a photo of the Enola Gay (the plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan) and a picture of a group of engineers, one of whom had the last name Gay.

Canada will not lift retaliatory tariffs on the United States if President Donald Trump leaves any on Canada, @AssociatedPress reports. "We're not interested in meeting in the middle," said finance minister Dominic LeBlanc to the CBC. In addition to tariffs, some provinces have banned the sale of U.S. liquor from stores, while Canadians have been boycotting U.S. products and stores for weeks. Foreign minister Mélanie Joly says Canada does not want to "go through this psychodrama every 30 days or so."

The Trump administration wants to review the social media accounts of prospective citizens, @theverge reports. The federal agency that oversees legal migration, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), proposed this new policy in the Federal Register, describing it as “necessary for a rigorous vetting and screening” of those applying for "immigration-related benefits." USCIS said this policy is necessary to comply with an executive order that President Trump signed on his first day in office, “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.” Here's what experts think.

The producers of "Hamilton" have canceled plans to bring the hit show to the Kennedy Center next year after Trump's takeover of the institution. “Our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” Jeffrey Seller said in a statement. The musical, for which tickets were yet to go on sale, was scheduled to be staged March 3-April 26 2026. Others who have canceled performances there include actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens, author Louise Penny and rock band Low Cut Connie. Here's more from @AssociatedPress.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has told Fox News that U.S. President Donald Trump may announce a deal tomorrow (Wednesday) that sees the U.S., Canada and Mexico "meet in the middle" on tariffs. “Both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today trying to show that they’ll do better, and the president is listening because, you know, he’s very very fair and very reasonable,” Lutnick said. Here's more from @GlobalNews.

Newly confirmed Education Secretary Linda McMahon has released her "final mission" for the Department of Education, potentially setting the stage for the agency's dismantling. In a document posted to the department's website, she stated that parents are the primary decision makers in their children's education, that taxpayer-funded education should focus on math, reading, science and history "not divisive DE programs and gender ideology," and that postsecondary education should be "a path to a well-paying career aligned with workforce needs." Here's the story from @abc. Find McMahon's full statement at the second link.

If you've seen Canadians share messages on social media (and "Saturday Night Live") with the words "elbows up" and wondered what that means, MP Charlie Angus has written this helpful explainer. Referring to the late, great hockey player Gordie Howe, Angus writes: "When Gordie put the elbows up, guys lost teeth or ended up with black eyes ... A big surprise is coming for guys like Pete Navarro, J. D. Vance, and the Trump trolls who think they can bully, threaten and push us around."
