South African English is truly a rich cultural and linguistic mish-mash of words.

Today my international students looked blankly at me when I described a particularly calculation-heavy solution as a real schlep.

Of course I assumed it was a common English word, but it turns out it's Yiddish!

Ask yourselves why words originated to describe disabled people are the words you use to describe fascists?

Fascist who make disabled people among the first they target & kill?

Seriously think about what it means that you'd rather use ableist slurs - that calling a fascist a fascist isn't insulting enough in itself? That calling them disabled is actually considered a *greater* insult than calling them a fascist?

It takes work to change, but the work starts with this Q.

🔴 📖 **Aramaic: Lingua Franca, Koine, or Both?**

_”The study investigates the historical roles of Aramaic as both a lingua franca and a koine, examining its development and usage across various periods. It identifies three main contexts: as the administrative and diplomatic language of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, as the religious and scholarly language of Jewish communities in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and as the liturgical and literary language of Syriac Christianity.”

doi.orgAramaic: Lingua Franca, Koine, or Both? The study investigates the historical roles of Aramaic as both a lingua franca and a koine, examining its development and usage across various periods. It identifies three main contexts: as the administrative and diplomatic language of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, as the religious and scholarly language of Jewish communities in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and as the liturgical and literary language of Syriac Christianity. Aramaic’s adaptability allowed it to function as an international medium for communication, transcending local dialects and ethnic boundaries. The discussion contrasts the broader concept of a lingua franca, which includes ad hoc languages for specific purposes, with the more structured and culturally embedded nature of a koine, developed within linguistic communities for unified usage. The article highlights Aramaic’s persistence through historical shifts, its role in intercommunal exchanges, and its eventual decline with the rise of Arabic as a dominant language in the region.

So much of the MAGA worldview hinges on the fear of being duped and emasculated. From the moment he rode down the escalator, the premise and constant refrain has been that "we" are imperiled, and "they" have lulled us into a vulnerable state.

Fascism is launched through a rhetoric of deception.

Deep State
Internal Enemies
Wokerati
Globalists
Etc.

It isn't paranoia when they're out to get you!

Dutch word of the day: Niksen

Litterally: to nothing.

Niks = Nothing
Niksen = The verb of nothing.

It's about doing nothing, usually a relaxed activity. It doesn't mean that you don't move, or you're not doing anything. But in spirit is very much the opposite of being busy or productive.

#Tip #Language

If you post something in a different language, say French & your usual language is English

Then you can change the post language to match what you post

On Tusky there's a language indicator at the top, click that & you can change the post language, it may be in a different place on other apps

This means other readers who's own post language doesn't match your post get a 'translate' option when reading it

Don't say gay in Trump's America — even if you're just referring to the name of a plane. @AssociatedPress reports on how the Defense Department is purging diversity, equity and inclusion content from its website. So far, 26,000 images have been marked for deletion including a photo of the Enola Gay (the plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan) and a picture of a group of engineers, one of whom had the last name Gay.
