The Old Map Gallery<p>In 1976, The New Yorker magazine published Saul Steinberg's famous cover meant to show the perspective on the world of the average person on 9th Ave in NYC. Its impact was immediate and still continues today, as it wasn't just a specific joke, but a lens by which you can portray the local perspective of anyone. David Castleton (Author)<p>After burial mounds, moats are the most common archaeological feature in the British landscape. There are at least five-and-a-half thousand, not only surrounding castles, but also dug around manor houses, monasteries, farms, chapels and even windmills. Moats had several functions - defence, keeping out thieves, deterring wildlife, acting as firebreaks, and being status symbols. The country's deepest moat is said to be at Nunney, Somerset - folklore claims it is bottomless. <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/archaeology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archaeology</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/psychogeography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychogeography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/weird" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weird</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/geography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>geography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a></p>

Martin Kunz, director of an institute for the #blind in #Germany, created a series of #embossed #graphics of #plants, #animals, & #maps for the students, by soaking & pressing thick #paper into molds, & adding #Braille descriptions.

I esp appreciate this b/c my eyes & brain don't work well together, & being able to see & feel an image at the same time helps me to truly understand it. 💪
