"If we look at cities anywhere in the world, San Francisco is needing to do some catch-up in basic walkability, bikeability, street safety….We need to decarbonize the transportation sector as rapidly as we can....In order to make sure everyone can still drive when they need to drive, ironically, we must do more to make transit faster, more frequent and more reliable, and to make walking and biking safer.”—Jeffrey Tumlin, outgoing director of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency transittalent.com/articles/ind

aside: wow, Mastodon search has gotten a lot better! (Perhaps this is also a function of @ivory ?)

Just put in: “from:@chris before:2024-09-15 bus”

in the search bar and was immediately delivered the exact thread from 111 days ago!

Alemany and Jensen Family MastodonChris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸 (@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca)Attached: 1 image I was looking at the upcoming bus 🚎 schedule for my work day commute to VIU. They generally make minor changes and release a new schedule every Spetember. Depending how I feel and the day of the week, I catch the bus at Woodgrove (North #Nanaimo), #Parksville or #QualicumBeach and take it to #VIU. I have been doing this since they started their “Intercity” run around 2008. I’ve been riding the bus system nearly every year since 1998. It has felt like this commuter service has been getting gradually worse over the years, but I never sat down and tracked it. That is until yesterday when I realized they introduced a new 33min wait time in addition to other small increases adding 45min to my journey! It’s outrageous. So I made a spreadsheet of the schedules since 2015 (the furthest back I could find schedules) and, well, it is depressing. And they wonder why they can’t encourage people to take the bus!! 😆 😠 😢 Meanwhile traffic gets worse and worse, accidents and stoppages are frequent and the rail line that follows the bus route is ignored. What are we doing!?🤦‍♂️ #transit #commuting #bus #work #life #carculture #rail

Guys!! i think my very pointed whining (with spreadsheets!) back in September to my local bus service may have borne fruit.

1) A month ago I sent an email asking for an update on getting me some historical schedules to continue my comparison and (!!) was informed the person in charge of scheduling had moved on…

2) the manager committed to get me the schedules within the month.

3) yesterday I got an email from the manager saying the schedules were ready for me to pickup. (all the way back to 2000!)

4) Today I see this service notice for changes coming January 5 which includes additional buses and, most interestingly *3* changes to the Qualicum-Woodgrove including increased service and 'minor route changes’.

They haven't published the schedule itself yet but hope springs eternal that this could be an improvement that allows me to get back on the bus more often! This fall has been the least I have taken the bus in probably 15 years purely out of deteriorating schedules.

Before spending time in Monterey / Salinas: WTF, Muni bus frequency is so bad, TWELVE MINUTES??

Now: YAY, ONLY TWELVE MINUTES

(I mainly take 49 so am used to buses coming every 5 min. I am then surprised by other buses here in SF)

I once went on stage and talked about ny relationship with buses in SF and elsewhere

We consistently value the work David Schmalz, staff writer for local, independent media #MontereyCountyWeekly / #MontereyCountyNow. He covers transportation, climate change, and more.

The history, potential impact, and current status of Monterey-Salinas Transit’s SURF! project is confusing to many. Schmalz shines a light on that project in this week’s MCW cover story, “Monterey-Salinas Transit’s SURF! project is hurtling ahead at great expense. Is it worth it?”
