I am now a monthly ACLU donor. I haven't slept well since November. Society is much better, safer and more prosperous with civil rights, justice for everyone, inclusiveness, separation of religion and state, and public education. Without those, wealth and life quality for everyone degrades rapidly.

Update. Good advice from #MichaelIgnatieff, past President of the Central European University in Budapest and Vienna (2016-2021): "How a University Fights an Authoritarian Regime. Viktor #Orbán came for me. Donald #Trump is coming for you. Here’s what to do."

"You’re going to need an alliance that pulls together American families, employers, unions, companies, the whole network of people and institutions beyond your campus who understand that the universities of America are critical to everything that is good about the country: its commitment to freedom, its devotion to excellence, its leadership in science and medicine. This alliance is going to have to get political — to reach across red state and blue state, identify the members of Congress from both sides of the House who understand why universities matter to their communities, to the American economy, and to America’s deserved reputation for excellence. Don’t mince words. It’s too late to play nice. Call a spade a spade. Convince enough Americans that the administration’s strategy deserves only one name: vandalism."

Apparently the week-long Amazon boycott had no effect on the company whatsoever. I'm not surprised because I've known for a while there is no way to practice conscious capitalism. The only paths are either to continue trudging in the ruts they've chained us in, or break the chains, slaughter the slave drivers, and burn the whole death ship to cinders and ash.

The oligarchs are too entrenched, too wealthy, and too smug to defeat by simply not opening our wallets for a week.

Capitalism can't be brought to heel or redeemed. It has to be destroyed.

Anyone remember the GOP freak out when Bill Clinton visited Attorney General Loretta Lynch on her plane? The mere appearance of meddling with the Justice Department sent them into world-ending tirades.

But now that Trump declares himself “Law Enforcer In-Chief”… crickets. #USPolitics

Some have criticised new Canadian PM Mark Carney for having no front-line political experience.

Sure enough, his answer to the suggestion that Canada should become a state of the USA is not a politicians answer, but it is an honest answer and absolutely correct in the circumstances.

The article has some useful context about Musk's career, notably what a sleazeball he has always been in his business and public dealings. It also points up the way governments have refused to do their regulatory jobs – and, less explicitly, how journalism has been a lapdog along the way.

But as it accurately points out Musk's desperate efforts to slow or reverse the well-deserved slide at Tesla, it doesn't get into the truly scary stuff. Namely, Musk won't give a damn about Tesla or its shareholders if his coup (per the first piece in this newsletter) succeeds. If he can divert U.S. government spending even more (see: SpaceX) into his bank accounts, Tesla will be an afterthought. Everything we know about this guy says there are no boundaries on his lust for money, and power. - @dangillmor
