Like, ok, technically you may have "consented" to Google or Microsoft or Meta or whoever storing data about you, colonizing the deep infrastructure of your tech devices and using data points from different apps/tools to build elaborate, person-specific profiles about you and selling those profiles or feeding your data into LLMs, etc., but the average person can't really function in daily life without those tools, so their "consent" wasn't really consent. And that's even if they know what they're "consenting" to, never mind dark patterns and cryptic privacy policy updates and so on. If you aren't free to say no without losing something you need to live a normal, functional life, then you can't, in any meaningful sense, say yes, either. Sure, people can seek out and find less sucky FOSS alternatives for some of those tools, but the time, money, and autonomy that makes that possible for people to actually do is very unequally distributed.

#Privacy

Zak :1password:
Quick #privacy rant:

Many people (I would argue most people) struggle to actually define privacy. I've heard plenty tell me that privacy is "staying invisible online," or that privacy is your ability to hide from others, especially large companies. Some very smart people have told me that they believe that privacy is their ability to stop others from accessing (personal) data about them that they shouldn't have. And I can see where all of these opinions come from.

With that said, I think they're mostly wrong.

It's my opinion that if you're in a situation in which someone is accessing data (about you or not) that they shouldn't have, what you have is a security issue, not a privacy issue. That's a data breach, and you should be looking to improve your personal security, not privacy. Privacy is also not your ability to stay invsible or hide online. That's anonymity, and while you may prefer anonymity as a subset of privacy controls, it certainly doesn't cover the entire subject. Many people who are not anonymous online are still very privacy-conscious.

Privacy is consent and control. It's your ability to be able to tell people (and companies) what they can do with your data once you've granted them access to it. Again, you must have done so willingly, because if a person (or company) obtains your data without your consent, it's a security issue, not a privacy issue. Once you've granted them both your consent and access to your data, privacy is your ability to control what they are allowed to do with that data. Don't want them to sell it? Tell them so! Don't want them to use it to train AI? Tell them so! Your right to consent and your control over your data is privacy.
