"Nous brûlerons alors le “bonhomme hiver” pour ritualiser, année après année, que le fascisme ne passera pas !"
We will then burn the "winter guy" to ritualise, year after year, that fascism will not come to pass.
And burn it did.

Carnaval populaire et déter à Lausanne. La première de beaucoup d'éditions, j’espère, on espère. À la prochaine et un grand merci aux organisateur·ex.
I think it was so clever to link an #antifascist protest to a known ritual like the #carnival, with its historical meaning. Carnival always had at least a whiff of antifascism. It served to create a space where "normal rules" do not apply, allowing people to speak truth to power. Yesterday we created an explicitly antifascist carnival & it just felt magical. This was exactly what so many of us needed.
And now let us create a similar worldwide street party on May Day.

It's fun to make long exposures of Ferris wheels. The light patterns you see are endless! Electric snowflakes, they are!
History tidbit: George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., (February 14, 1859 – November 22, 1896), inventor for the Ferris wheel, lived in Carson City, Nevada, for a short period of time. The Sears–Ferris House is at 311 W Third Street in Carson City. And in Reno, there is a street named after Ferris.
Ketchup, mustard, or both? (Me? Both with a lemonade and extra lemon.)
One thing about Rio de Janeiro, the city knows how to bring about good weather. Year after year, the Marvelous City defies meteorological forecasts and is blessed with dry weather and clear skies when it needs it the most, such as during its famed Carnival celebrations. Don’t tell the locals it’s pure luck. They know it’s because of a weather-controlling spirit called Cacique Cobra Coral.

The beloved INTERGALACTIC KREWE OF CHEWBACCHUS, with its #scifi and #fantasy theme, can be viewed here in replay. Fast forward past slow spots if you like. No one is in a hurry.
This year's theme: "Rise of the Superb Owl".
Professor Longhair combined musical influences in the 1940s, creating exciting music with his piano virtuosity while building the foundation of #funk music in #NewOrleans. Influenced many, like Dr. John. More of his songs and info later in this seasonal thread.
"Black or white, local or out-of-town, they all had Longhair's music in common. Just that mambo-rhumba boogie thing."
— Allen Toussaint
Flowing piano riffs over percussive horn section. You know how to whistle don't you?

During a pause in recording an album, sisters Barbara Hawkins, Rosa Hawkins and their cousin Joan Johnson, began an unplanned tune amongst themselves based on a song they heard their grandmother sing.
They created a beat using drumsticks on an aluminum chair, an ashtray and a Coke bottle.
The producer recorded it, added backup vocals, bass and drums, and released it in 1965. It was an international hit, and Mardi Gras history was made.

Goin' Back To New Orleans
- Dr. John
True story: last Thursday, I almost choked to death on a large plastic object embedded in a piece of cake. In any other place, at any other time, this might have been a lawsuit. But here in #NewOrleans, during #Carnival, my co-workers deemed this entirely my own fault. Somehow, over the last year, I entirely forgot about these little plastic babies that come in every #kingCake. Don't let it happen to you @noladon
Happy Twelfth Night to all who celebrate!
In South Louisiana we are culturally obligated to eat delicious King Cake beginning on Twelfth Night and all throughout the Carnival season.
King Cake is like a big cinnamon roll cake with purple, green & gold frosting and sprinkles, sometimes filled with cream cheese, raspberry, strawberry or blueberry preserves.
There is a little plastic baby in the cake and if you get the baby in your slice you have to bring the next King Cake to the party.
It is a super fun and delicious tradition.
