Coding is like taking a lump of clay and slowly working it into the thing you want it to become. It is this process, and your intimacy with the medium and the materials you’re shaping, that teaches you about what you’re making – its qualities, tolerances, and limits – even as you make it. You know the least about what you’re making the moment before you actually start making it. That’s when you think you know what you want to make. The process, which is an iterative one, is what leads you towards understanding what you actually want to make, whether you were aware of it or not at the beginning. Design is not merely about solving problems; it’s about discovering what the right problem to solve is and then solving it. Too often we fail not because we didn’t solve a problem well but because we solved the wrong problem.

When you skip the process of creation you trade the thing you could have learned to make for the simulacrum of the thing you thought you wanted to make. Being handed a baked and glazed artefact that approximates what you thought you wanted to make removes the very human element of discovery and learning that’s at the heart of any authentic practice of creation. Where you know everything about the thing you shaped into being from when it was just a lump of clay, you know nothing about the image of the thing you received for your penny from the vending machine.

February may be the shortest month, but the Thunderbird desktop team filled it with updates, improvements, and important conversations. Including:

* What you can find in the new monthly Release channel
* Talks on privacy and security
* What's landed in the Calendar rebuild work and in EWS support on Daily
* The new Account Hub, which you can test this week in Daily!
* Global Message Database and In-App Notification news

In the latest issue of the Intellectual Property Forum, Dr Olugbenga A Olatunji has written a generous review of our Edward Elgar Publishing collection on intellectual property and the sustainable development goals edited by Bita Amani Caroline B Ncube and myself - 'An in-depth exposition of the 17 sustainable development goals (“SDGs”) adopted in 2015 through the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 (“UN SDA”). Across 25 chapters, seasoned intellectual property scholars appraise the stage of implementation of these SDGs with particular emphasis on the cataclysmic role that IP plays in slowing down implementation.' #IP #SDGs #development #sustainabledevelopment lnkd.in/g--Zpqz4

GitLab CFO, Brian Robins, says they are “aligned with the goals of DOGE, because the company’s software tools aim to help people do more with less. What the Department of Government Efficiency is trying to do is what GitLab does.”

You either support fascism or you don’t. It’s binary. There’s no gray area or “aligning.”

Considering GitLab? Don’t. Use @Codeberg.

🔗 The web was always about redistribution of power. Let's bring that back. via @ben #Development #Webdev #Tech #Socialmedia

Many of us got excited about technology because of the web, and are discovering, latterly, that it was always the web itself — rather than technology as a whole — that we were excited about. The web is a movement: more than a set of protocols, languages, and software, it...

If I could pay someone to extend the Mastodon source code with some sort of subscription management in order to enable instance admins to provide an easy way for their instance dwellers to financially contribute who should I ask, and what would be a reasonable price to develop it?

Perhaps integrate initially with a few "ethical" payment providers?

Purpose: Create incentives and tools to help people pay for their Fediverse experience.

📝 Alternatives to US tech platforms #Development #Webdev #Tech #Politics #Socialmedia

With the US rapidly devolving into a failed state with the endorsement (both full-throated and tepid) of many tech leaders, I’d urge you to reconsider your use of any tech platforms and tools offered by companies based here. Donating to a fascist’s inauguration isn’t a shrewd business decision, it’s a demonstration that you’re...

"Many bugfixes" (with no list following) is my favourite part in changelogs.
Because it's a two words long detective story.
The sheer number of questions it raises can keep users entertained for weeks.

Like:
- which bugs were fixed?
- which bugs were promoted to features?
- did anyone even read MY bug reports?
- were bugs, which I've reported, fixed?
- and do developers actually know what they're doing?

Don't write changelogs like that.

Friends. I’m honored to be part of a team who is archiving data being targeted by fascists: science, health, DEI, climate…all of it.

It’s exhausting, mentally psychologically. But totally worth it.

What @lavaeolus began is now a thriving group effort. There’s a core group of us working feverishly, but anyone is welcome to join us.
